Listening to God. Such an Interesting Phrase

Listening to GodListening to God.  Isn’t that such an interesting phrase that gets tossed around?  I mean, we are able under the grace of God to get to live.  Just that fact, that we were created and allowed to live a life that has opportunities and blessings of its own, is amazing.

No one will ever know the complete reasoning that the infinitely powerful God used for creating us and our earth, but we sure go on living as if we don’t care.  We take so many miracles for granted, that we end up wanting more and more.  Anyway, all of this leads up to people believing that the all-powerful God that rules over everything that we kow in life (and infinitely more than that), is obligated to communicate with us.  More so, we get the idea in our heads that He should answer all of our problems, or at least respond to us every time we ask him for anything.  Never mind the fact that we hardly every praise or thank him for anything, or acknowledge that God is responsible for the good things that happen in our life.

What I’m getting at is this.  Listening to God is surely something that we need to be good at.  It is hard to be good at this, and it seems old fashioned.  There are so many times when I have begged God for an answer and got absolutely nothing.  Well I should say, I got nothing that I was expecting.  As much as I wish there was a better answer, I have to say that patience is so often the answer.  Sometimes we are just called to wait for God to pave the road ahead, while we better ourselves in every way possible.  Also, keep this in mind.

God’s decisions are always right and perfect.  It stands to reason that the more in tune we are with God, the closer our decisions line up with His.  Therefore, the more we study the bible, pray, and spend time being together with other Christians, the closer our decisions will be to perfect.  Decisions are not just made at the second we make them.  Decisions are made with every action we do, every thought we think, and every circumstance that we put ourselves into.

Our entire life leads up to every new decision we make, and if we have prepared well, we will make the right decisions.

Just keep your head up; when God’s not giving you answers, it is because

A) He knows you are very close to the right answer

B) He has already provided you with the strength and wisdom to make the right decision.  Sometimes it’s time for us to just put our big boy pants on and work through problems on our own.  Those are the times in which we truly grow as individuals.

Jordan

I am a senior at Brandywine High School and am just trying to make a difference in my community. There are many different decisions that are in need of making soon, but for now I am just enjoying the life that God has given me, and preparing to follow his direction.

  • Jordan awesome reminder!! We do need to Thank God for the little Miracles!
Have you ever seen a miracle in your life??

  • Awesome post Jordan, I can’t tell you how many times in my own life, I have neglected to listen to God.

I rush to bed, and unload all my requests, and comments to God then fall asleep, or jump to the next thing in my day. I can just imagine God sitting with his jaw dropped, and eyes wide open thinking, “HELLLLLLLLOOOOO”

We do need to sit and listen for a response as well as talk with Him, prayer is a conversation not just a spiritual vending machine, to get what you want.

  • So true Jimmy.

I also have learned when we stop and listen the answers are often different then we expect. When I pray I’m often guilty of saying your will God but already have the plan of how he will work it out in my head..

It’s always amazing to see how different Gods way is from our way!! And it is always the best way :-)

  • It’s crazy to think that sometimes we come to the God that created the universe and is infinitely more powerful and amazing than we could ever even imagine, and treat the conversation like He is our mom or dad, simply giving Him updates and requests. I am really trying to work on imagining the majestic nature of God, not just the forgiving and loving nature.

  • Yes it is breath taking to think of that…

God is very interested in what is happening in our lives also so he does enjoy the time we spend tellin him about our life but we should always take the time to appreciate what an honor it is to be allowed to approach him… He does deserve our worship so we should do that daily in prayer not just in praise and worship time at church.

  • Very true.. God does tell us to be dependent on him..

He does tell us no because all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose… This includes things that may not be pleasant for us.. But we must remember his purpose is much larger than just us.

  • “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.”

Thank you Monte, I definitely see where you are coming from on this and had to take a look at this again. My two points were not suggesting that we ever stop relying on God, or that we look to ourselves and our own finite knowledge and ability to handle situations. The point I was trying to make is this: God gives us the ability to do things and overcome things, but it is us who ultimately have to execute the action in our lives, by leaning on and using the gifts He has given us. In Hebrews 13, it gives a list of things that we are to do, and to abstain from. But it closes by indicating that is only through God that we can accomplish these things when it says, “Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” The key words there being “the God of peace…equip you with everything good for doing his will, and work in us what is pleasing to him…”
